Let’s be clear, the odds on my enjoying Gambit were poor from the start. The ‘caper’ movie is just above made for TV real life inspirational drama and evangelical apocalypse propaganda in my list of hated film genres.

Let’s get this out of the way: the opening credits pretty much reveal most of the major plot points. That said, the animated sequence also sets the tone for the quirky humour that ensues in this remake of the 1966 film of the same name.
Shadows on the Wall
A script by the Coen brothers gives this film a zing of wit, although director Hoffman completely misses the chance to play up the edgier comedy, which leaves the film feeling very silly. But a cast of scene-stealers keeps it mildly enjoyable.

"I am here to amuse, sir!” says put-upon art curator Colin Firth to his “shitbag” employer in Gambit, a remake of the 1966 heist caper that sees the The King’s Speech man step into the shoes, and spectacles, of one Michael Caine.
Empire
A few smiles and some fraying charm, but big laughs are missing. This just about gets away with it rather than romps off with the loot.

Time Out London
Comedy is hard, so they say. Fluffy, 1960s-style caper movies are tough, too, if this mediocre remake of a far superior 1966 frolic is anything to go by. The original starred Michael Caine as a schemer teaming up with a nightclub dancer to part a...
